The Robstown Whenger is an insult.... 2/28/2006 8:19:58 AM
intelligent thinking listeners of 1440 Keys. Why Bob Jones lets H. Villareal make unsubstantiated claims about "big money" dictating local politics without any real evidence is beyond me. Let's hear some real evidence of misdeeds, not some generalized whengefest that offers nothing in the way of proof! Bob Jone's "guest" sounds like a audio recording for the visually impaired. He has seen "nothing" but has "heard" it repeated (and then it is most often himself that is doing the repeating!) about how all politicians are corrupt. Rambling on and on about how the political machine keeps the little man down and taking potshots at folks who live on the "island" like the caller Sally did was cheap and makes for very bad radio. Hey I live on the island and I don't consider myself part of any well oiled politco machinations that rule over the lowborn and uneducated. Truth is, anybody can live out here on the island if they put their mind to it. First step, get a job! Hardcore Harry

I have no response to the Island issue, I think you''re right. I know a lot of people who live on the Island who are not political, and merely work hard to have a home there. In terms of money and politics, it is very true and Homer is correct. However, I refuse to write about it on this forum for legal and business reasons, so hopefully the next time around that we meet, I can discuss it with you. As someone involved in the Engineering and Construction industry, I can identify bribery in local government on a frequent basis. It''s not fair, and it''s damn near impossible to crack, but it exists because there''s the principled way, and then there''s the political way. I really wish I could talk about it here, but it would be a poor practice. We''ll talk it in-person.

Re: Re: The Robstown Whenger is an insult.... 2/28/2006 9:01:31 AM
Would you agree that raising the issue on the air without offering proof to substantiate his claims makes for bad radio? Better to leave it be than whenge on and on the way he does. If he insists on making it his ""cause de guerre"" why not offer some real solid proof of misdeeds? I believe our political system would benefit greatly if some of this corruption were made transparent. Sure it might be a fantastic scandal, but we can get over that. I can think of nothing better to restore the voter’s faith in government than to clean house and get rid of the taint of corruption. Hardcore Harry

I agree with you that if a person chooses to go on the air waves and make references to corruption in our government, he should be willing to provide names, dates and exactly what he observed in order for the public to be better informed about the issue. However, allowing someone to go on the radio with unsubstantiated claims DOES capture the attention of the public and increase station ratings, and for some people that''s a good thing.

What makes this chit a haven for these low-lifes is the potential jurors. Where else will you find a more ignorant collection willing to loot any deep pockets. Curtis Rock is correct about local government in regards to shady business and operational practices. There are certain individuals that give preferential treatment to other individuals under the time-honored ""One Hand Washes The Other"" tradition. At times you do not even have to have the right facts to win favor in regards to your cause, you just have to know the right people. A very sad situation, but very true. In following the lead of CR, writer will not get into specifics for fear of the job related and quite possible legal problems that could occur.

That seems to be the norm these days. However, this doesn''t mean that everyone in politics is corrupt. There are still a few good politicos out there. They just seem to be outnumbered. As to Curtis Rock and JusCommonCents I need to add that the both of you should be very careful when commenting on ""things"" you know. In the military if you knew something to be classified, you didn''t say, ""I would tell you but it''s classified"". You just avoided that subject all together. If you know of business that are getting preferential treatment, for whatever reason, you say that and be done with it. Anytime you state that job related and legal problems could arise, you draw a lot more attention to yourself. JusCommonCents has a certain amount of anonymity in these posts but Curtis Rock doesn''t. You really need to think before you post. Just my thoughts.

Like I said, I know of things and I will speak of them but I am not willing to put it in writing here. I will talk to you in-person, and even present research to you in-person. If I write it down here, then I''m putting myself into a great deal of liability. As far as drawing attention to myself, I don''t see it as a problem on here. My response was directed to Harry when it seemed he doubted that money and politics were not intermingled. One association that I''m highly involved in is the Associated Builders and Contractors, and there''s books full of research information regarding local construction that demonstrates some questionable actions.

Re: Re: Every government has its level of deceit... 2/28/2006 2:14:16 PM
Just for the record, I do not doubt that there is corruption in some facets of local politics here in South Texas. This all goes back to what Captain/Major Carrales was saying sometimes back on the burden of proof being on the negative. I also question whether Homer is ""connected"" that well and if he even has the ""goods"" on any officials. Let''s suppose he does know something and is not telling, doesn''t that make him a facilitator of the very corruption he purports to be speaking out against???? He would get a big ""Hell yeah! Bring it on!"" from me if he were to come out with the evidence. That he has not done so thus far can mean one of two things: 1) He doesn’t have any evidence. Or, 2) He has evidence but he won''t release it for fear of reprisals from the ""machine."" That would make him a ""caged crusader"" instead of the garden-variety ""caped"" kind that he plays every Tuesday. There is no such thing as courage emanating from inaction. You can quote me on that! As to ""the DEl MAR taxing entity"", if you''re refering to HB 2221 in the last session of the ledge, HB 2221 would have basically extended the taxing district to include all of Nueces, Aransas, Kenedy, San Pat and part of Kleberg counties. As to NASCC being on the chopping block via BRAC, no county money from any county should have been spent on the embarassing ""Please Don''t Close Our Base Campaign"". The decision should have been left to the military and the committee. If it results in area counties and cities not rallying money and support to fight closing a base that has been deemed unnecessary it''s a good thing.
Capt CarralesPosts: 1947

The"
...was the WASTE of MONEY that should have been protested. There was no way to save those bases by lobbying or payment. That would morally amount to bribery. I recall that these people went on the talkshows and fought for that conceptually similar appropration of funds. Texas A&M University-Kingsville is not a KINGSVILLE or KLEBERG county insitituion. It is a State institution. People are looking at this as a ""Why are we giving Kingsville that money?"" I say it is a waste...but don''t be so CORPUSCENTRIC and be fair to the contemporary history of all this. If Kleberg County was expected to ""picth in"" to save the Federal Institutions of NAS Corpus Christi and NS Ingleside...Nueces County better be prepared to do the same to save a State Institution in Kleberg County. And that''s one form you ""county Cousin!!!""

curtis rockPosts: 312

Re: The"
The big difference is money is being spent on a study (whatever that''s suppposed to mean). Whereas in the BRAC situation, money was being spent for lobbying and campaign efforts. At least in BRAC, money was spent on an idea, but in this situation there isn''t a single idea about where the 1-million is being spent on. It would be like setting up a personal budget for several thousand dollars for home improvements without any idea of what improvements would be made. Budgets should not be designed for such specific cluelessness.

Nueces County has approved three million dollars in ''consulting fees'' over the next three years to be paid to TAMUK. The money will be paid for, among other things, a study on how the Nueces County can be run more efficiently. What a crock. Unable to organize its own financing for its pharmacy school, the politicians of the two counties have wrangled a deal and the citizens of Nueces County will pay for it. This is what happens when we fail to vote and fail to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions. This deal stinks.

Hey Threadsters WATT DID I tell you guys about the annexation of the Island Portion of Cleberg County? @ Port Royal? Remember?

Beach takeover
I hope everyone in Corpus Christi and especially those who live on North Padre Island took the time to read Nick Nelson's article ("City says neigh to new stable," Jan. 28).
Apparently, Mr. A.R. Graham, owner of Mustang Riding Stables, would like to move his business to a 50-acre beachfront location just south of Balli Park, but the city won't allow him to do so. Why? According to Mr. Nelson, this land was annexed by the city in 2001, and zoned for high-rise condos and apartments.
Forget the vehicles. Let's talk about a public asset that the residents of Padre Island, the citizens of Corpus Christi, and, in fact, all Texans have a vested interest in. Before our elected officials give away to any group of real estate speculators the public's unabridged right of access to their beaches, these officials ought to make sure the public benefits from the transfer. No one yet has proven that to me.
Give 'em an inch . . . and they'll take a mile. First north of Balli Park and soon, a mile south.
Dave Plut

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Why did the City of Corpus Christi annex property that belonged to Cleberg County? Why did out of state workers (from Louisiana) work for BNP in the Land Cut before the rape (drilling) of the National Seashore? Texas Observer Political Intelligence: 3/15/2002 Barbara Canales-Black, who is running for the open Senate District 20 seat in South Texas, is co-owner of BNP Petroleum, which has recently begun drilling for natural gas on Padre Island National Seashore. Canales-Black’s firm quietly obtained the permit in February from the National Park Service, and the drilling has since become a hot issue in South Texas and in the election. She has three primary opponents, including McAllen State Represen-tative Juan Hinojosa, and a runoff is possible. (At press-time, the primary is still five days away.) Canales-Black is the scion of a well-connected political family and has been using her oil wealth to outspend Hinojosa three to one in the race. Her father is Tony Canales, Tony Sanchez’s private attorney. (Canales, you may recall, was the one who hired the private dicks involved in the embarrassing investigation–some say smear campaign–against former Secretary of State Henry Cuellar.) To access the site, BNP had to bulldoze a road through pristine dunes. The site itself is covered by a 1.7 acre well-pad made of crushed rock. As obtrusive as this is on an almost completely undeveloped national seashore, this well may be just the beginning. The company’s permit applies to a 1300 square-kilometer drilling area on the island, and BNP also has plans to do slant drilling–for oil, not gas–from the shore out into the bay and gulf. According to Erin Rogers of the Sierra Club, the company has benefited from the Bush administration’s "streamlined" National Park drilling rules, which do not require a separate environmental impact statement for each new well in a permitted drilling area. To add insult to injury, as recently as eighteen months ago the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had planned to designate as much as 7,000 acres in the area as critical habitat for the piping plover, a threatened bird. This designation would have made much of BNP’s proposed drilling area off limits. But BNP came back with their own habitat study, which predictably recommended protecting a much smaller portion of the seashore. Backed by Nueces County and local Chambers of Commerce, the company successfully lobbied FWS to reduce the protected area to 2,000 acres.
CCCT Article by Nelson
Before it was annexed by the city in 2001, the land was zoned for farming and ranching and was used as a stable. After the annexation, the city zoned the newly acquired land for high-rise condos and apartments, but the stable was grandfathered in and allowed to remain.
-->
Graham wants to join with that stable and take advantage of its grandfathered status, but the city says any addition to the stable, even additional horses, would violate the new zoning ordinance. Graham said the city so far has been inflexible in negotiations about the new site.
"It doesn't matter what you say to them - they just don't give a damn," he said.
Robert Payne, senior planner for Corpus Christi, said Graham's business worked well on Mustang Island, where the beach is wider and less crowded, but would be a poor fit for Padre Island.
"We're pro-business in this community, but this looks like compatibility is an issue on the island for this business," he said. Payne said the land would have to be rezoned as light industrial to accommodate the riding stables, but the city's current policy advises planners not to zone any of Padre Island for industrial use.
Graham had considered retirement last year, and even floated the idea to friends and customers.
"I was just going to take all my horses and move them to a ranch somewhere. There are a few old horses that have treated me real well, and I was thinking of putting them out to pasture," he said. "But then I had over a thousand calls asking why I wasn't staying in business."
Now Graham says he's determined to open the business again - and he hopes to do so in the next two weeks. He said that if necessary, he will take the issue to court. "I'll go out of town and get a lawyer who doesn't know anybody in this town and sue the city."
Jaime seems to think that if we disagree with Eric over an issue--the beach--that we are automatically opposed to Eric on all fronts. Moreover, I think it is comical that he tries to tie the whole thing into his grand conspiracy theories of the KFATSO puppet masters pulling all the strings here in the region, including Eric's support of the beach development. My disagreements to the beach project stem on access, not so much on economics. Hardcore Harry
I had to get real serious in order to stop getting the crap from Jaime. Are we even sure Jaime is an adult? This whole argument he is having with me over the structure of KEYS radio is completely absurd and like a child throwing a tantrum he can''t let it go. Now everybody speaks for KEYS. You’re a host, I''m a host, wouldn''t ya like to be a host too? We could sing it to the tune of the old Dr. Pepper theme. It''s amazing that we had a supposed grown man try to argue with me, an 11 year host at KEYS radio, about who was a host and who spoke for KEYS because he listened to the radio and that’s all he needed. When proven wrong he just keeps going like nothing happened. If you guys are interested you should go to the last pages and look at the Jaime Kenedeno posts I saved from his first visit to this site. First, no one knew what the hell he was talking about, second when he talks about individual hosts he doesn''t use KEYS at all and certainly not interchangeably with the actions of the host or guests and third you can see Condot''s first appearance in some of the very same threads making thinly veiled threats of involving me in a lawsuit if I don''t stop Jaime from posting on my website. I have to say, I don''t thing it''s simply because I''ve seen the bottom of the intellectual barrel with some of the thugs just mentioned but you guys that have been here as well as the newer threadsters like Elwood, Guido, Marine, and the rest are doing an impressive job. I didn''t think I would say that about Elwood when he re-emerged after years of absence but I think Elwood hadn''t listened to my show in quite sometime and your impression was based on something from 9 or 10 years ago. I could be wrong but I don''t sense the animosity that you had on first appearance. I certainly have found myself agreeing with you on more than one issue. Not the extreme left-winger I first thought you''d be. I have even adopted the Ninja-Death-Debate tactics of Curm. I don''t use it nearly as proficiently or often but sometimes justice comes through nuclear aggravation and that''s a punishment I like to dish out. But just like the nuclear bomb, I think it should be used as a last resort. I will have to say it''s nice to know there''s a few fellows who won''t be sneaking up on us at night cause they''re glowing in the dark.
""Are we even sure Jaime is an adult?"" A legitimate question,but chronologically..yeah..I believe so.I''ve talked to him about this on other boards and suggested he just drop it..after all,it''s just a question of semantics anyway..host,co-host,guest host,hostess with the mostest..what difference does it make? His boy is on the radio,getting his ""message"" out to some extent..wasn''t that the ultimate goal? But Jaime (or ""plume de la guerra"") as he''s taken to calling himself now feels that somehow he was personally slighted by you,Eric,so I imagine he''ll still wield the ""pen of war"" in your direction. ""I didn''t think I would say that about Elwood when he re-emerged after years of absence but I think Elwood hadn''t listened to my show in quite sometime and your impression was based on something from 9 or 10 years ago."" Closer to 5-6 years ago,maybe..but spot on in the assessment,nonetheless.Water under the bridge,though..that was then..this is now.I''ll be the first to admit that my reentry to this board was rather inauspicious,and probably could have been done differently in retrospect,but it''s nice to know there''s no lingering animosity.
